What a skin booster is, and how it differs from filler

A skin booster is an injectable gel or formula placed just under the surface of the skin with very fine needles, usually as a series of tiny injections across an area. Most are based on hyaluronic acid, the same water-holding substance used in filler, but in a much softer form that spreads through the skin instead of holding a shape.

Filler is placed to add volume or structure in one spot: fuller lips, a more defined chin. A skin booster is about the skin itself: how hydrated, smooth and even it looks. It won’t change the shape of your face, lift anything or replace filler, and the effect is temporary.

Skin boosters compared: Profhilo and Seventy Hyal 2000

There are several kinds of skin booster, and the names can be confusing. Here’s how the common ones differ, based on published product and practitioner information. Which one suits you depends on your skin and what you’d like to change.

How many sessions, and how long results last

Skin boosters work gradually. Most are given as a short course a few weeks apart, and the effect builds over the weeks after each session. Results vary from person to person and are temporary, so most people come back for occasional maintenance sessions if they’d like to keep them going.

How many sessions you need depends on your skin, the product and what you’d like to change. I’ll recommend a plan at your consultation and tell you honestly what a course can and can’t do.

Who skin boosters suit, and who they don’t

Skin boosters may suit you if you’re 18 or over and you’d like skin that looks more hydrated, smoother or more even, without changing your features, and you’re happy to come back for a course.

They aren’t right for you at the moment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; have broken skin, an infection, a cold sore or a skin flare-up in the area; have a history of severe allergies, or are allergic to anything in the product; have a bleeding disorder or take medicines that thin the blood (tell me at your consultation); have an autoimmune condition (we’ll talk it through, and I may ask you to check with your GP first); tend to form raised scars; have sunburn; or feel unwell or feverish on the day.

Your appointment, step by step

  1. Arrival and ID. I’ll check your photo ID. Your full address is in your booking confirmation.

  2. Consultation. We look at your skin, go through your health history and agree a plan, and you sign a consent form. If treatment isn’t right for you, we stop there and your deposit is refunded in full. If you’d rather plan a course before your first session, book a consultation on its own (20 minutes, £[[ASK]]).

  3. Preparation. Your skin is cleansed, and numbing is used where appropriate.

  4. Treatment. Fine, shallow injections across the area. You’ll see small bumps as the product goes in; they’re expected.

  5. Aftercare. Written aftercare to take home, and your next session booked in if you’re having a course.

Risks and side effects

Common and short-lived: small bumps at the injection points, redness, swelling, tenderness and pinpoint bruising. Less commonly: infection, lumps that take longer to settle, or an allergic reaction. I’ll go through these at your consultation, and your aftercare sheet tells you which signs mean you should contact me.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a skin booster and filler?

Filler adds volume or shape in planned spots. A skin booster is spread through the skin to support hydration and quality, and doesn’t change your shape.

How many sessions will I need?

Most skin boosters are given as a short course, a few weeks apart. I’ll recommend a plan for you at your consultation.

When will I notice a difference?

Skin boosters work gradually, building over the weeks after each session. Results vary from person to person and are temporary.

Can I wear make-up afterwards?

Please leave your skin bare for 12 hours, then apply make-up with clean brushes. [[ASK: confirm 12 or 24 hours for the product you use]]

Do skin boosters hurt?

Your comfort matters. Numbing is used where appropriate. The needles are very fine; you may feel a series of small pricks.

Can I have a skin booster and filler?

Often, yes, though not always on the same day. We’ll plan the order at your consultation. [[ASK: confirm your practice]]

Clients from across South Bristol

Because skin boosters are a course, being close matters. The treatment room is in BS13, a short trip from Bedminster, Hengrove, Whitchurch, Knowle and Long Ashton, and closer still from Bishopsworth, Hartcliffe and Withywood. Your full address comes with your booking confirmation.

Lip filler

Lip filler uses a hyaluronic acid gel to add shape, definition or a little volume. I offer 0.5ml, 0.7ml, 1.1ml and 2.2ml, and we choose the amount together at your consultation, which is part of the same appointment. Swelling settles over about two weeks, and the result is temporary.
